Dental Implant Process Timeline

The process timeline for dental implants lasts over several months, so you are receiving smaller procedures at one time. During each of these surgeries, the dental surgeon will supply you with anesthesia to numb your mouth while the work is in progress.

The required steps for a dental implant are as follows:

• Initial Surgery – After going through all the testing, you will have your first surgery, and this one consists of the dental implant inserted into your jaw, below the gum line. The gums will then get stitched back together, giving the implant time to bond to the jawbone and adhere to the gums. The healing process will be different for everyone, depending on how your body heals and could take a few months.

• Second Surgery – During the second surgical procedure, your dentist will add a tip, or an abutment, to the already inserted dental implant. This piece will be the middleman between the tooth and the jawbone and will connect the two. Some dentists do this procedure at the same time as the first surgery.

• Tooth Fitting – The last part of the process is the tooth fitting, and this may take several appointments before the tooth fits correctly.

Dental Implant Recovery

Once the surgical procedures are complete, you will still need to see your dentist for at least one follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing. Detailed instructions will inform you how to care for your new artificial tooth properly. 

For the most part, aftercare will consist of keeping your teeth clean and treating them well, which is the same for those who haven’t had dental implants. If you feel any pain, in most cases, your doctor will recommend over the count Acetaminophen.

Again, as everyone’s pain tolerance, and procedures, are different, no answer fits everyone. However, there are is an average timeline that you can use as a guide.

One Week Post Surgery

Some people still report a bit of discomfort the following week, which can last for up to ten days.

Two Weeks Post Surgery

If you are experience pain two weeks post-surgery, or if it has increased before the two-week mark, contact your dentist as soon as possible as this may be a sign of infection.

If you have had a tooth extracted or lost in another way, and you want to replace it with a dental implant, you don’t have to worry about the tooth implant’s pain as it is significantly less than when the tooth came out.
